18th Annual Russian Orthodox Church Musicians' Conference
October 5-9, 2005
The Eighteenth Annual Russian Orthodox Church Musicians' Conference will explore the mystical aspect of the musical dimension in Orthodox church services, with particular emphasis on the Divine Liturgy. The centrality of music and communal worship in the mystical process of prayer in the Orthodox church will be the main theme of discussion.
We sing in the Cherubic hymn: “let us who mystically represent the Cherubim… lay aside all earthly care, that we may receive the King of all, Who cometh invisibly upborne in triumph by the ranks of angels.” Through our divine services we become one with the Kingdom of Heaven - they are inseparably intertwined with the co-serving of the angelic hosts and the very presence of Our Lord Jesus Christ “seated upon the throne.”
In the silent prayer at the Entrance with the Gospel, the priest prays “O Master Lord our God, Who hast appointed in the heavens the ranks and hosts of angels and archangels unto the service of Thy glory: With our entry do Thou cause the entry of the holy angels, serving and glorifying Thy goodness with us.” We will gain a better understanding of how through our musical participation in the divine services we are joined to the Kingdom of Heaven on earth.
“Now the powers of Heaven do serve invisibly with us. Lo, the King of Glory enters… Let us draw near in faith and love and become communicants of life eternal. Alleluia!”
The Reverend Deacon Dimitry Bolgarsky (Professor of Liturgical Music at the Kievan Theological Academy and featured lecturer at last year's conference in Santa Rosa, California), by popular demand, will return to give the Keynote Address.
Registration is now open (click on the "Register" link on the left ), including on-line registration and payment (Credit/Debit cards, etc.).
God willing, see you in October!
